    Past Simple and Past Continuous

    We use PAST SIMPLE to talk about: 


    1. Finished actions that happened at a specific time in the past . 
    We had a Maths test at school yesterday.
    2. Past routines /habits/situations.
    Dad lived in London when he was young.
    3. Several actions in the past that happened one after the other.  
    I got home, showered and climbed into bed. 
    4. Main events in a story.
    The man looked around, then walked quickly into the room. 





    We use PAST CONTINUOUS to talk about: 

    1. Action in progress at a certain time in the past. 
    She was sleeping at 11 last night.
    2. Two unfinished actions taking place at the same time.
    I was doing my homework while my brother was playing the guitar.
    3. Unfinished action interrupted by another action.
    Jack was walking to work when it started to rain. 
    4. Description or background information in a story. 
    We were all sitting around and watching TV. Suddenly, there was a loud noise.
